Characters

Right now I am working on a novel. It is a murder mystery with conspiracies attatched to it. I have a very general plot but I am having trouble with character development. Creating a whole new person is not something that is easy to me.

Try chacter sheets to start with... until it gets easier. You write down everything about their hystory and differnt important situations that effected them then you right down how they respond to differnt situations which would effect how they effect the story.
Then when you get a feel for who they are they are more likly to behave in the story.

I used to do that. It ended up not being any help - more of a hinderance. More of the planning getting in the way... I found just developing a few characters and then working on the rest as I go works well for me. That way a character could grow into who they are, just like real life. I read a couple of biographies, and the authors I admire the most do it that way too. But then, we're all different. Cute kids story. :)
